The novel begins with a very intriguing brief description of the tragedy, of the a plane that contained a group of English boy crushed down on a mysterious island. This novel introduces a fair-haired boy name Ralph and a boy who Ralph stumbled across who was chunky and short named Piggy being trapped on what they assume is an island. The author slowly but descriptively describe about the tragic scene that they saw right before their eyes, scatted pieces of debris. The very first thing that the fair-boy, Ralph noticed was that there was NO adults. Through their conversation, we are able to learn for a fact that the plane that was carrying a group of schoolboys was shot down over the ocean. It then tragically crashed in thick through palm tress.
As Ralph and Piggy are investigating this “island”, they encounter a large pinkish coloured conch shell, which Piggy recognised that this could be use as a signal, for those entire survivors out there to be gathered together to have a meeting. In a distance, a group of choir heard the noise and immediately react to it and ran to the direction of the noise. They have gathered together as one big group and they all decided to elect a leader. Through some thinking and examining, their final decision was Ralph, the boy who blew the conch and made the meeting. Ralph, now the leader of all of the survivors, demands that all the choir should be hunters. Not soon after, Ralph picks Simon and Jack to explore the land, which they assumed was an island. As they approach this beautiful mountain, they try to think of a way to get up and see the view and confirm that they are on a mountain. Soon after, they reach the top too find a spectacular view on the island and its surrounding. |
Prediction:
After reading, the intriguing first chapter and the book starting to introduce each and every character. I assume that the next chapter the group of boys may talk about, escape routes and survival plans. As looking at the next chapter's name "Fire on the Mountain." I predict that the boys may have deliberately lit the fire as a signal for any transport passing by to rescue them. Also, by judging the name of the next chapter I believe that, it might be about evilness approaching as fire represents darkness and evilness.

Opinion:
In my opinion, the first chapter of this book is not as good as i expected. Like society says, "Don't judge a book by covers." I was disappointed to the introduction of the book as it was engaging, it was only introducing everyone. The author "William Golding" nearly introduced all the characters at the same time which made it confusing, as i didn't know who was who. Afterwards, i just don't get how they just randomly found a conch, and started blowing. In my point of view, I don't think there's any logic in this first chapter, and there won't be in the rest of the book.
